“Failure should be our teacher, not our undertaker. Failure is delay, not defeat. It is a temporary detour, not a dead end. Failure is something we can avoid only by saying nothing, doing nothing, and being nothing.” – Denis Waitley.
Failing is a part of life. Humans are not perfect and hence strife for perfection. What we do when we fail is what determines the quality of opportunities that would come once we get up. My dear mgbeke most people fail not because they lack knowledge or talent but because they just quit. They lack the patience to persevere, to push on and to grab what is rightfully theirs..
“I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games, 26 times I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot … and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. That is why I succeed.”
~ Michael Jordan
A lesson from History-
- Thomas Edison’s teachers said he was “too stupid to learn anything.” He was fired from his first two jobs for being “non-productive.” As an inventor, Edison made 1,000 unsuccessful attempts at inventing the light bulb. When a reporter asked, “How did it feel to fail 1,000 times?” Edison replied, “I didn’t fail 1,000 times. The light bulb was an invention with 1,000 steps.”
- Federico Fellini’s first films, “Luci del varieta” and “El sceicco bianco” were dismal financial and critical failures. In 1952, one film critic wrote, “We shall never hear from Fellini again.” Two years later, Fellini directed “La Strada,” which went on to garner the Academy Award and New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Foreign Film, as well as the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. What is it they say about critics … something about knowing the worth of everything and the value of nothing?
It’s important to remember two words: persistence and resistance. Persist in what must be done and resist what ought not to be done. My dear mgbeke, the only time you fail is when you give up, its when you stop trying and sink into defeat, its when you begin to imagine the countless setbacks you would face and not overcome, and unfortunately once you are at this point, there is nothing you will do that you will succeed in because, you already have a poor mindset towards your opportunities.
Persists and resist, try different approaches towards providing that solution or pursuing that cause. Keep learning and keep trying and even if you fail don’t see it as another setback, instead tell yourself you have just found another way of not doing it right…
And if you’re feeling up to it, we would love to hear from YOU before you go…
