We have talked about politics, leadership, strategic communication, emotional intelligence, and the importance of strategic silence. Tonight before we go to bed, let us look at another very important lesson in leadership: the difference between noise and wisdom, between popularity and credibility.
Many people are speculating about Senator Adams Oshiomhole’s recent comments and actions. Some believe he is positioning himself for future political opportunities, while others see it as part of the normal dynamics of politics. Whatever the motivation may be, one thing remains clear: leadership is ultimately judged by consistency, discipline, and credibility.
It may interest many Nigerians to know that none of Senator Godswill Akpabio’s four daughters is reportedly working in NNPC or any federal parastatal. Facts matter. Evidence matters. Leadership should always be guided by facts rather than assumptions, emotions, or political theatrics.
I have always respected Senator Adams Oshiomhole for his activism, courage, and willingness to speak truth to power when necessary. His contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey cannot be ignored. However, on this particular matter, I believe he has been unnecessarily careless with some of his utterances. That is precisely why I cautioned the overzealous media aides around the Senate President to embrace strategic silence. When the truth is on your side, time often becomes your strongest ally.
What we are witnessing today is a situation where previous statements, interviews, testimonies, and public positions are being compared against current positions. When leaders appear inconsistent, they risk creating conflicts not with their opponents, but with their own words and actions. That is a dangerous place for any public figure to find himself.
Let us even assume, for the sake of argument, that all of this is part of political maneuvering ahead of 2027. Leadership is not a popularity contest. It is not about who shouts the loudest, dominates headlines, or generates the most controversy. Leadership is about trust, judgment, emotional maturity, discipline, and the ability to inspire confidence even among those who disagree with you.
A leader who speaks carelessly today may struggle to convince people tomorrow. A leader who appears inconsistent today may find it difficult to earn trust tomorrow. It takes far more than speeches, interviews, and political grandstanding to become a trusted and intelligent leader.
One thing that must be acknowledged is Senator Akpabio’s remarkable restraint throughout numerous controversies involving political opponents, critics, and media attacks. Whether one agrees with him or not, maintaining composure under sustained pressure requires discipline, emotional intelligence, and a deep understanding of leadership.
The higher you rise in leadership, the less you talk and the more you think. The stronger you become, the less you react and the more you reflect. Strategic silence is not weakness; it is often the highest form of strength.
In the end, Nigerians will not remember who shouted the loudest. They will remember who demonstrated wisdom, consistency, discipline, emotional maturity, and the capacity to lead when emotions were running high. That is the true test of leadership and Senator Godswill Akpabio has demonstrated that leadership capacity and integrity 100%.
