Convicted Music Superstar R. Kelly Forcefully Placed On Suicide Watch After Being Sentenced To 30 Years In Prison

Convicted R&B legend Robert Sylvester Kelly, popularly known as R. Kelly, has been reportedly placed on suicide watch barely a few days after his sentence was handed down despite his lawyer’s insistence that he is not suicidal.

Kelly was sentenced to 30 years in prison on nine counts of sex trafficking and racketeering on June 29, 2022, almost a year after being convicted by a New York jury.

Convicted R&B legend R. Kelly, has been reportedly placed on suicide watch barely days after his sentence was handed down despite his lawyer’s insistence that he is not suicidal.

The singer, who is being held in a New York federal detention facility, was slammed into suicide watch holding, and his attorney, Jennifer Bonjean, claims that he is being “victimized and targetted because of his fame.”

Speaking in a recent interview, Jennifer said: “The irony of putting someone on suicide watch when they’re not suicidal is it actually causes more harm. The prison officials had told prosecutors that they would place the performer on suicide watch because he was so well known.

It’s punishment for being high-profile. And it’s horrifying, frankly. To put someone under suicide watch under those conditions is cruel and unusual when they don’t need it.”

Kelly was sentenced to 30 years in prison on nine counts of sex trafficking and racketeering on June 29, 2022.

She also added that she is worried for him because she had asked him to email her from the federal Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn once he returned from his sentencing hearing, but he has yet to revert.

Kelly’s sentencing was handed down in the Brooklyn Federal Court by Judge Ann Donnelly comes after prosecutors had reportedly urged the court to put the singer behind bars for a minimum of 25 years.

This was following the trial that lasted five weeks, during which several witnesses gave damning testimonies of how the famous singer victimized and sexually abused them and how he deceitfully arranged his marriage to the late music star Aaliyah, who was only 15 years old back then.

Kelly’s case has served up a few lessons that we have spoken about already, but this latest development raises a question in our minds:

Kelly’s attorney, Jennifer Bonjean, claims that he is being “victimized and targetted because of his fame.”

(1) Would Kelly have been treated like this if he were White?

While we’re not in any way trying to excuse or tone down his utterly despicable atrocities or even pity him at all, we cannot help but think about this fact and ask this question, though.

Would he have been put on suicide watch in prison when the authorities knew he was not suicidal if he was White? According to his attorney, this is all in a bid to make his life and punishment a lot more miserable, and it’s pretty sad for him, seeing how he used to be so adored by all these same people.

Does he deserve to suffer for all his heinous crimes against the women he sexually brutalized and traumatized? Yes, he does. But should he be singled out for extreme measures like he is being allegedly put through right now? No, we disagree with that.

Again we would like to reiterate the most significant moral in this ongoing saga, and it is the fact that an unchecked, unbridled, and uncontrollable libido and sexual appetite will surely be the death of anyone who allows it to rule and dominate their lives!

May God help us all and keep us from evil; Amen.
