In today’s world, almost every single person wants to be very happy and comfortable. But can money really improve one’s emotional wellness? I doubt if money, power, and status can protect someone from their own worst traits.
We equate money and power to happiness, even though a lot of powerful, famous, wealthy people and most successful public figures are experiencing relational and well-being crisis events that we used to associate with people who made up the lower stratus in the earnings category.
We have come to realize, though that domestic violence, depression, anxiety, drug addiction, drunk driving, alcoholism, immoral sexual behaviors, and physical altercations don’t discriminate against the “rich, famous, powerful and the poor”, yet many people still assume that money and power will buy them happiness and immunity from the worries that they have in the less affluent status they currently carry.
The truth is, money does make someone happier, but only to a certain extent. When you reach a comfortable lifestyle, when you don’t worry about your basic needs anymore, having more money doesn’t bring you more happiness. At this point, some people start seeking for attention, power, and higher status that may jeopardize their lives and happiness. Prioritizing money and power over time may actually undermine your happiness.
That brings us to ask these honest questions; what makes you happy? Can money buy you happiness? What really makes for a good life, if money, status, power can’t guarantee your happiness and emotional wellness? Money can improve your emotional wellness to a certain point but is not a guarantee that you will be happy or happier. Having more money or power or the combination of all can provide many positive things but not without managing your worst traits. When you put your negative or worst traits in check or under control, you will live a happier life.
Life is very interesting and our happiness should not be tied to material things, power, status, or money. When our ambition is bounded, it leads us to work joyfully, it leads us to be comfortable, confident, happy and our emotional well-being is guaranteed. But When our ambition is unbounded, it leads us to be envious, jealous, to lie, to cheat, to hate, to steal, to manipulate, to hurt others, to sacrifice things of real value, and eventually lose our peace, joy, and happiness in the midst of our wealth, riches, status, power.
