Key Reflections & Lesson As Lawyer Reveals Nnamdi Kanu’s Worry Over Hausa, Fulani In Detention
The leader of the legal team to the embattled leader of Indigenous People of Biafra, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, Barrister Ifeanyi Ejiofor, has disclosed that Mazi Kanu has been worried about the fate of political detainees in Nigeria, including Hausa and Fulanis.
Releasing a pretty lengthy statement to the press after he visited the IPOB leader in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) in Abuja, Nigeria, in the late hours of August 18, 2022, Barr. Ifeanyi said:
“The court-ordered routine visit to our indefatigable client, Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, was conducted at the DSS Headquarters Abuja, where Onyendu is being held in solitary confinement for over 13 months now.
In line with the new guideline introduced by the DSS, albeit, still in flagrant violation of the court’s guideline, routine visits to Onyendu are still being conducted separately with time apportioned for each person.
I first met with Onyendu, and the opportunity afforded an exclusive heart-to-heart discussion with him. I briefed him on the status of all the filings in our Appeal coming up on October 11, 2022, for a definite hearing. Onyendu was also informed that all court processes are now before the Court of Appeal, setting a fertile stage for overripe legal fireworks on that day.
However, further details on the subject remain private, but we can assure you all that it will be an interesting argument come October 11, 2022.”
Barr. Ifeanyi also disclosed: “Onyendu was also briefed on the other pending court actions affecting Umuchineke still being held in various detention facilities across Nigeria. He was satisfied with the level of progress in each of the individual cases.
Onyendu can never change; even in solitary confinement, he is deeply worried about the fate of other detainees, including those of different ethnic extractions, which are mainly Hausas, Fulanis, and others, presently languishing in custody. Instructions were equally taken in that regard, and we are going to swing into serious legal actions to ensure that those concerned regain their freedom.
Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is truly a liberator and a gift to humanity, whom everyone, regardless of ethnic affiliation, should be proud of. May the Almighty Chukwuokike Abiama continue to bless Onyendu for his kind heart.”
The legal counsel concluded by adding: “Onyendu also reiterated his confidence in those steering the ship on his behalf and implored everyone to give them the maximum cooperation needed for maximum output.
Onyendu further extended his warm greetings, regards, and love to you all, Umuchineke, and emphatically admonished for continued peaceful coexistence. Onyendu is profoundly enthused by the level of calmness and peaceful environment presently being enjoyed in the entire South-East; he encouraged every stakeholder, particularly Umuchineke, never to relent in giving their best to sustain the tempo.
Thank you all, Ezigbo Umuchineke, and remain blessed, even as you continue to remain law abiding as you have always been.”
One major point and question we would like to reflect on and also ask at this point is that is this, not the same man who was branded as a “terrorist and threat to national security” and has been mindlessly incarcerated for years by President Muhammadu Buhari’s regime?
What kind of terrorist is bothered and even begins to fight for the release of the kinsmen of his afflictions that are also locked up with him in prison?
Mazi Kanu is obviously not and has never been a security or even physical threat to anyone, and has only always been about the good of his people and others around him, too. This is what this administration has imprisoned and kept him in solitary confinement for years over, and it is not only appalling but equally very shameful as well!
An important lesson for everyone from Mazi Kanu’s behavior is also seen in the scriptural injunction for us to “love those that hate you, so good to them who are evil to you, and pray for those who despitefully use you.” It is truly worthy of praise and emulation by everyone.
May God keep him safe and deliver him from the evil clutches of those who would see him dead for whatever messed-up reasons they have…amen!
